A verb, inflected to form a progressive tense, has always the ending –ing. In most cases, it is enough to place –ing at the end of the verb. However, it is sometimes necessary to do other changes to the verb. If the verb ends in a silent e (as in take), remove it and then place –ing instead (as in taking). If the verb is short and ends in a consonant preceded by a stressed vowel (as in get), that consonant is doubled and then –ing is added (as in getting). In British English, if the verb ends in an l preceded by a vowel (as in model), the l is always doubled (as in modelling). An exception to this rule is the verb to deal. If ie are the letters the verb ends in (as in lie), replace them by y (as in lying).
